Celebrating International Women's Day: Female MPs and Ministers Reflect on Progress and Challenges

As Uganda joined the rest of the world in commemorating International Women's Day, female Members of Parliament (MPs) and ministers took the opportunity to celebrate achievements while reflecting on the challenges that remain.

Judith Nabakooba Nalule, the Minister of Lands, Housing, and Urban Development, highlighted the significant strides made by women in securing land ownership. She noted that many women now have legal rights to land, a departure from the past when such ownership was rare. She emphasized the government's commitment to creating a favorable environment for Ugandan women to thrive.

Hajjat Huda Aleru, the State Minister for Defense and Veteran Affairs, pointed out the increasing number of women joining the armed forces and police, despite the gender gap still being noticeable compared to men. She praised the NRM government for its efforts to empower women in leadership roles across various sectors, including parliament and other government institutions.

However, challenges persist, particularly for young girls in rural areas who continue to face poverty and exploitation. Female MPs such as Christine Bukenya Ndiwalana of Kyankwanzi and Christine Kaaya Nakimwero of Kiboga highlighted the struggles faced by rural women, calling for more targeted interventions to address their unique needs.

In Kyankwanzi District, celebrations were held under the theme of promoting national leadership, with events attended by local leaders and representatives. The day also served as a reminder of the government's commitment to gender equality and women's empowerment, as championed by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.

While progress has been made, the day underscored the need for continued efforts to address the remaining gaps and ensure that all women, regardless of their background, can fully participate in and benefit from Uganda's development.
