Uganda Falls Short at Uganda International Badminton Championship in Lugogo

Uganda failed to perform well at the Uganda International Badminton Championship, a highly competitive tournament held at Lugogo Indoor Stadium this weekend. The event attracted over 25 countries, with Indian players dominating most of the categories.

In the men’s doubles, the Indian pair of Dingku Singh and Amaan Muhammad triumphed over their compatriots Akshan Shetty and Sankar Udayakumar in the final. Meanwhile, in the men’s singles, India’s Manraj Singh defeated Azerbaijan’s Dicky Dwi Pangestu to claim the title.

The United States also made a mark, securing three medals. Lauren Lam and Alison Lee won gold in the women’s doubles, while Ishika Jaiswal took home the gold in the women’s singles. Switzerland’s Lucie Amiguet and Caroline Racloz won silver in the women’s doubles.

Uganda’s performance was disappointing compared to previous years. The country had only two representatives, Tracy Naluwooza and Shamika Fadhila, who were eliminated in the quarterfinals. This marks a significant decline from the 2022 championship, where Uganda won a bronze medal through Brian Kasirye and Muzafaru Lubaga.

The tournament highlighted the growing competitiveness of international badminton, with Uganda struggling to keep pace. The results serve as a wake-up call for the country to invest more in training and development to regain its standing in future championships.
