9 Dead, 3 Injured in Kapchorwa-Mbale Highway accident

Kapchorwa District, Uganda – A horrific accident occurred today at around 12:40 pm along the Kapchorwa-Mbale highway near Kapwachiti, claiming the lives of nine people and leaving three others injured. Preliminary reports indicate that the fatal crash was caused by brake failure, leading to the vehicle losing control on a slope and overturning.
According to eyewitnesses and police reports, the driver was transporting both cattle and passengers on the same truck—a dangerous and illegal practice. The vehicle, which was carrying people on top of the cargo, suffered a mechanical failure as it descended a slope. The driver reportedly lost control due to brake failure, causing the truck to overturn.
All the casualties were passengers on the ill-fated vehicle. Nine individuals died on the spot, while three others sustained serious injuries and were rushed to a nearby medical facility for treatment. The identities of the victims have not yet been released as authorities work to notify their families.
SP Kananura Michael, the Public Relations Officer of Uganda , confirmed the incident and issued a stern warning to truck drivers against overloading and transporting passengers on top of cargo.
"This is a tragic and avoidable accident. We urge all drivers, especially those transporting goods, to adhere to safety regulations. Overloading and carrying passengers on top of cargo is illegal and extremely dangerous. Let us prioritize safety to protect human lives," SP Kananura emphasized.
The accident has sent shockwaves through the Kapchorwa community, with locals expressing grief and frustration over recurring accidents caused by negligence. Many are calling for stricter enforcement of traffic laws, particularly against overloading and poor vehicle maintenance.
Road safety activists have long warned about the dangers of transporting passengers on goods vehicles, a common but hazardous practice in some parts of Uganda. This tragic incident has reignited discussions on the need for better road safety measures and stricter penalties for violators.
Police and traffic authorities are conducting further investigations to determine the exact cause of the brake failure and whether the driver had prior mechanical issues with the vehicle. The bodies of the deceased have been taken to the mortuary as families prepare for burial arrangements.
Today’s accident serves as a grim reminder of the consequences of disregarding road safety regulations. As authorities work to prevent future tragedies, drivers and transport operators are urged to prioritize safety, maintain their vehicles properly, and avoid overloading at all costs.
