Torrential Rains Wreak Havoc Across Uganda: Homes Destroyed, Lives Disrupted

Buikwe/Mukono, Uganda – Heavy downpours have triggered severe flooding and destruction in multiple districts, leaving families stranded, crops ruined, and infrastructure damaged.

The worst-hit areas include Namusenyu (Buikwe) and Katosi (Mukono), where rising waters have submerged homes, roads, and farmland.  

 Key Impacts:  
 Homes Washed Away – Families in Katosi Town (Mukono) lost houses to flash floods, with roofs torn off by strong winds.  
 Schoolchildren at Risk – Pupils struggle to navigate flooded paths, raising fears of drownings.  
 Farmers Devastated – Banana and cassava plantations destroyed, worsening food insecurity.  
 Health Crisis Looming – Stagnant water raises cholera risks; pregnant women and the sick struggle to reach hospitals.  

 Voices from the Ground:  
- Namusenyu Village (Buikwe):  
  "We sleep with children on tables to escape floodwaters. Hunger is biting—our crops are gone." – Local resident  
- Katosi Fishing Community:  
  "Our boats and nets were swept away. How will we feed our families?" – Fisherman  

 Leadership Response:  
- Hon. Diana Mutasingwa (Buikwe Woman MP) acknowledged slow intervention but promised drainage works.  
- Charles Tamale (Katosi Town Chair) appealed for emergency relief: "We need tarpaulins, seeds, and food NOW."  
Betty Hope Nakasi (Mukono Councillor) urged residents to plant trees to curb soil erosion.
