Simon Mundeyi Raises Alarm over Rising DNA Test Requests

The Ministry of Internal Affairs has expressed concern over the growing number of Ugandans seeking DNA testing services; a trend that officials say reflects deepening family mistrust and social pressure.

Speaking to the press at the Ministry headquarters, Spokesperson Simon Mundeyi revealed that the Directorate of Government Analytical Laboratory (DGAL) has recorded a significant increase in the number of individuals requesting DNA tests, particularly for paternity verification.

He says just in the past one week 94 cases were registered and of this 95%were men seeking paternity tests for their children, 2% were women requesting DNA tests for their children, and 3% were children bringing their parents in for testing.

“We are witnessing a sharp rise in citizens turning up for DNA testing, with many citing doubts over the paternity of their children,” Mundeyi said. “This is a serious social matter that has implications on family stability and emotional wellbeing.”

Mundeyi attributed the surge to heightened public awareness, increased media coverage of high-profile DNA cases, and the availability of more accessible testing options. He further noted that some individuals were being influenced by social media narratives that promote suspicion and conflict in relationships.

The Ministry is urging Ugandans to approach such sensitive issues with caution and responsibility. Mundeyi called on families to seek counseling and mediation services before resorting to DNA tests, stressing the psychological toll such revelations can have on children and entire households.

“DNA testing is a scientific tool for the truth, but we must not allow it to become a weapon of emotional harm,” he cautioned.

The Directorate of Government Analytical Laboratory remains the only accredited government facility for such tests, and Mundeyi encouraged the public to avoid unlicensed private operators.
