UPDF claims control in Kasese after machete attacks killed over 40, injuring many.
KAMPALA – The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has declared it is in command of the security situation in Kasese district, following a wave of brutal machete attacks that have left over 40 people dead and numerous others wounded. The violence, which included an assault on a police post, prompted a significant military deployment, resulting in the arrest of approximately 100 suspects.
The security situation was reported as "alarming" last week, with grief-stricken families pleading for the release of their deceased relatives' bodies for burial.
Addressing the nation at a press conference held at the Media Centre in Kampala, the UPDF Chief of Defence Forces Political Commissar, Major General Henry Masiko, asserted that the crisis would have escalated further without the army's timely intervention.
Army Grapples with Legal Reforms
In a separate but related matter, Maj. Gen. Masiko revealed that the recent Supreme Court ruling on the UPDF Amendment Bill has hampered the army's justice system. The ruling, which blocked the military from charging civilians in its court-martial, has presented operational challenges.
Veterans' Benefits and National Celebrations
The press briefing also served as a platform to outline the benefits for military veterans under the new UPDF Amendment Bill. Maj. Gen. Masiko confirmed that the legislation is designed to ensure veterans receive all their entitled monetary benefits. He announced that a nationwide sensitization campaign will be launched to educate veterans on how the bill addresses their long-standing demands.
Furthermore, Maj. Gen. Masiko disclosed that the forthcoming Tarehe Sita celebrations, marking the annual Armed Forces Day, will be hosted in the Kigezi region on February 6th. The event will be preceded by a series of civil-military cooperation activities, including the upgrading of classrooms and housing units in the district, underscoring the army's commitment to community development.
