The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, today hosted the European Union Special Representative for the Great Lakes Region, His Excellency Ambassador Johan Borgstam, in a meeting that underscored the robust and ongoing security partnership between Uganda and the European Union.
The high-level discussion, which took place at the Special Forces Command (SFC) Headquarters in Kampala, served as a direct follow-up to initial talks held between the two parties in November 2024, signalling a commitment to sustained and progressive dialogue.
During the meeting, General Kainerugaba and Ambassador Borgstam are understood to have discussed a range of regional security issues of mutual interest. The talks focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation and fostering stability within the Great Lakes region, an area of strategic importance to both Uganda and the EU.
A brief statement released after the meeting highlighted its cordial and productive nature, emphasising the shared commitment to peace and security.
"The meeting served as a follow-up to the initial discussions held in November 2024, highlighting the continued dialogue between the Ugandan People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and the European Union," the statement noted.
This continued engagement marks a significant step in reinforcing the security architecture between the Ugandan military and the 27-nation bloc. The EU has been a key partner in supporting various regional peace and security initiatives, often in coordination with local forces like the UPDF.
Analysts view this recurring high-level dialogue as a positive indicator of the EU's confidence in its relationship with Uganda's military leadership, particularly under the new command of General Muhoozi. The discussions are expected to pave the way for deeper collaboration in areas such as counter-terrorism, peacekeeping operations, and professional military training.
The outcome of today's meeting is anticipated to inform future joint efforts aimed at addressing the complex security challenges within the volatile Great Lakes region.
