Tensions as NUP Faces Legal Battles and Internal Strife

Political Tensions Rise as NUP Faces Legal Battles and Internal Strife Ahead of 2026 Elections

Political unrest continues to brew in the country as the National Unity Platform (NUP) finds itself embroiled in legal and internal disputes. The party is under scrutiny for alleged irregularities, with court orders restricting its activities in the Electoral Commission. Meanwhile, divisions within the leadership are escalating.

The National Unity Platform (NUP) is facing a critical moment as legal challenges threaten its participation in the 2026 general elections. A court case filed by dissenting members has resulted in an injunction barring the party from engaging in any electoral activities until the matter is resolved.

Sources indicate that the case stems from internal disagreements, particularly concerning the legitimacy of the current leadership under the "Kavule faction." Some members accuse the party of failing to follow its constitution, particularly in the registration of candidates for various positions.

Court Order Halts NUP Activities: The Electoral Commission has been instructed not to recognise any actions taken by NUP until the pending case is concluded.

Leadership Clash: Party Secretary Paul Ssimbwa Kagombe has publicly criticised the "Kavule group," accusing them of disregarding party laws and court directives.

Members at Risk: Some NUP cardholders fear disqualification from elections if the party remains entangled in legal battles.

Paul Ssimbwa Kagombe, speaking on Kibalama. The media warned that those defying court orders would face consequences. He emphasised that the party must resolve its legal issues before proceeding with nominations.

The case is set to proceed in court within the next 20 days, determining whether NUP can continue its preparations for the 2026 polls. Observers warn that prolonged disputes could weaken the party’s electoral prospects.

As tensions rise, all eyes remain on the judiciary and the NUP leadership. Will the party overcome these hurdles, or will the infighting derail its 2026 ambitions? For now, the political landscape remains uncertain.
