President Museveni Honors Late Eriya Kategaya, Calls for Purpose-Driven Leadership

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has called on Ugandans to lead purposeful lives, emphasizing the importance of serving others and contributing to the nation’s development. The President made these remarks during a memorial service held in honor of the late Eriya Kategaya, a former Deputy Prime Minister and influential figure in Uganda’s political and legal landscape, who passed away on March 2, 2013.

President Museveni praised Kategaya for his dedication to public service and his significant contributions to Uganda’s education reforms. He described Kategaya as a selfless leader who prioritized the welfare of the people over personal gain.
The President also used the occasion to criticize some politicians who, he said, are more focused on advancing their personal interests rather than serving the public. He warned against the dangers of political parties that exploit religion for their own agendas, describing such practices as detrimental to the country’s unity and progress.

Reflecting on his own journey to leadership, President Museveni recounted the struggles he faced, starting from Nakawa Sub-county, and highlighted the importance of perseverance and commitment to a cause. He urged Ugandans to emulate the values of hard work and selflessness demonstrated by leaders like Kategaya.
Vice President Jessica Rose Epel Alupo also paid tribute to Kategaya, describing him as a diligent and patriotic leader who loved his country deeply. She praised his contributions to Uganda’s development and his unwavering commitment to public service.
Joan Kategaya, the widow of the late leader, expressed gratitude to President Museveni for his continued support to their family. She described her late husband as a man of integrity who was deeply committed to his work and family.
Dr. Juliet Kategaya and Mashelo Solomon Kategaya, children of the late Eriya Kategaya, thanked President Museveni for honoring their father’s legacy. They acknowledged the strong foundation their father laid for them and expressed pride in his achievements.
Richard Keijjuka, a friend of the late Kategaya, shared fond memories of their friendship, highlighting Kategaya’s humility and dedication to his work.
Eriya Kategaya was born on July 4, 1945, and passed away on March 2, 2013. He was a renowned lawyer, educator, and politician who served as Uganda’s first Deputy Prime Minister. His legacy continues to inspire many, and his contributions to Uganda’s development remain significant.
The memorial service served as a reminder of the importance of purposeful leadership and the lasting impact of selfless service to the nation.
