NRM Elections In Sembabule District Face Delays Amidst Controversial

The NRM electoral process in Sembabule District has hit a snag, with elections postponed for five days due to unresolved disputes. If issues persist, the exercise could stretch into next year.

Dr. Tanga Odoi, speaking to the media, accused some leaders in Sembabule of undermining NRM officials. He warned that Saturday’s elections would be decisive, with a final round scheduled for Friday.

Meanwhile, Dr. Odoi revealed that while 95% of NRM chairperson elections across districts proceeded smoothly, 5% faced irregularities.

In Kampala, polls were largely successful, except for one contentious area where voting was halted. In Lubaga and Nakawa, elections were postponed and will be rerun.

The NRM Electoral Commission noted that regions like Karamoja, Sebei, West Nile, and Lango have also seen varying degrees of progress in their internal polls.

Dr. Odoi likened the ongoing NRM structural elections to a "revolution," signaling upcoming grassroots elections for parliamentary, LC5, and other positions.

However, the NRM court has barred youth candidates under 30 from vying for national leadership roles, citing age requirements.

Parliamentary aspirants must now pay a 3 million shilling fee and submit bank-verified payment slips alongside nomination forms.

Amidst these developments, protests have erupted over alleged election malpractices during Friday’s polls.

In a related update, the NRM has welcomed a court ruling dismissing a petition challenging the Electoral Commission’s decisions. Dr. Odoi declared the party ready for future electoral processes.
