The President General of the Democratic Party Uganda (DP), Norbert Mao, also doubles as the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, has today declared his intention to contest for the position of Speaker of the 12th Parliament, saying he is prepared to offer experienced and impartial leadership to the August House.
Mao said his decision is intended to strengthen parliamentary democracy and ensure that Parliament effectively serves the interests of all Ugandans.
While announcing his bid, Mao emphasised that the office of the Speaker requires integrity, independence, and a deep understanding of parliamentary procedures.
He pledged to promote fairness in parliamentary debates and ensure that all Members of Parliament are given equal opportunity to contribute to national issues.
He also called upon Members of Parliament across political parties to support his candidature, noting that the Speakership should be guided by competence and commitment to national service rather than political differences.
Mao said that if elected Speaker, he will work to promote transparency, accountability, and unity in Parliament, adding that the institution must remain strong to effectively perform its oversight role.
More details about his bid are expected to be communicated as the process for the 12th Parliament unfolds.
