Lugazi Boda-Boda Leaders Clash with Town Clerk Over Election Method

Lugazi Central Division, Uganda – Tensions flared in Lugazi as boda-boda stage chairpersons rejected Town Clerk Jane Kayiza Nalongo's directive to conduct their upcoming elections through a show of hands instead of a secret ballot. The dispute escalated during a heated meeting at the Division headquarters, exposing deep divisions in the transport sector.

 The Controversy
With 27 operational stages and over 500 riders in Lugazi Central Division, the boda-boda sector has been plagued by leadership disputes and political interference. Town Clerk Nalongo insisted on open voting, arguing it would ensure transparency. However, riders vehemently opposed this, fearing intimidation and vote manipulation.

"Secret ballot is our only guarantee of free and fair elections," argued Steven Ndawula, a chairperson aspirant. "Open voting will breed conflict in an already volatile sector."

 Security Concerns
The Buikwe Deputy RDC, alarmed by reports of violence, threats, and child labor infiltration in the sector, called an emergency meeting. "We can't risk another chaotic election," stated a security official, pushing for a speedy resolution.

 Leadership Standoff
Boda-boda representatives accused the Town Clerk of overstepping her authority by imposing voting methods without consultation.
Town Clerk Nalongo maintained that open voting prevents electoral fraud, citing past incidents of ballot stuffing.   Lugazi Mayor Lutajani Kemissi mediated, urging compromise: "We need an election method that ensures both transparency and credibility."

 Election Details
The polls, scheduled for May 26, will fill 11 leadership positions, including:
 Chairperson
 Vice Chairperson
Treasurer
Defense Secretary

 Way Forward
With neither side backing down, the Division has temporarily suspended the election pending further consultations. The standoff highlights broader challenges in regulating Uganda's boda-boda sector, which remains prone to political exploitation and internal strife.
