General Muhoozi Kainerugaba inspected the L-39NG demonstrator at Entebbe Air Base

UPDF Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, inspected the Aero L-39 SKYFOX (L-39NG) demonstrator at Entebbe Air Base.

Entebbe, Uganda – In a powerful demonstration of the Uganda People's Defence Forces’ (UPDF) modernisation drive, the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, today personally inspected the state-of-the-art Aero L-39 SKYFOX (L-39NG) demonstrator at Entebbe Air Base.

The inspection was conducted alongside a technical team from the Czech aerospace manufacturer, Aero Vodochody, signalling a significant step in potential fleet enhancement for the Uganda Air Force.

General Muhoozi seized the moment to reaffirm a core strategic vision. “Building a modern, technologically advanced Air Force is a top strategic priority for the UPDF,” he stated. The inspection of this next-generation trainer and light combat aircraft underscores a decisive shift from the force’s early days.

His remarks highlighted a profound transformation arc: from the National Resistance Army (NRA) era, which began with no air wing, to today's evaluation of cutting-edge aviation technology. This progression marks a continuous commitment to advancing national defense capabilities.

The aircraft at the centre of the inspection, the L-39NG, is a fully modernised version of the classic L-39 trainer, many of which are already in service with air forces across Africa. The new generation model features:
   A modern glass cockpit with advanced avionics
   A more powerful and efficient FJ44-4M turbojet engine
   Enhanced performance, range, and payload capacity
   Capabilities for advanced pilot training and light attack missions

The evaluation of such a platform points towards Uganda’s intent not only to train its future pilots on modern systems but also to bolster its tactical air power with versatile and cost-effective aircraft.

Today’s event at Entebbe Air Base is more than a routine inspection; it is a symbolic milestone. It reflects the UPDF’s ongoing journey from its grassroots origins to a professional force actively engaging with global defence manufacturers to secure its future operational readiness.

The move aligns with a broader regional trend of air force modernisation and emphasises Uganda’s focus on acquiring scalable, sustainable technology to meet evolving security challenges.
