Nabatta has pledged to actively represent the interests of the Buganda region by being an active member of the Buganda Caucus in Parliament.
ENTEBBE, UGANDA – Joyce Nabatta, the National Unity Platform (NUP) MP aspirant for Entebbe Municipality, has announced that her primary focus upon winning the seat will be to advocate for the plight of the fishing community. She emphasises that she aims to represent a fishing region grappling with numerous challenges in the sector.
In an exclusive interview with Salt Media, Nabatta stated that her immediate concern is the conduct of the Fisheries Protection Unit (FPU), which has been reportedly chasing away fishermen, leaving many jobless. She also highlighted the critical issue of water transport, specifically the ferry connecting Nakiwogo to Buwaya, which she says is insufficient to meet the area's full transport needs, a problem echoed at other landing sites.
Nabatta secured the NUP party ticket after defeating four other contestants, including the incumbent MP, Mbwatekamwa.
She has also vowed to exercise strict oversight over public funds, particularly those collected from markets and other sources. She pointed to the recent and reportedly ineffective road rehabilitation project in Katabi as an example of the kind of expenditure she would scrutinise.
When questioned about the essential quality for a politician in Entebbe Municipality, Nabatta pointed to character as the fundamental basis. She boasted of her ability to engage with all religious groups, providing what she describes as inclusive leadership.
On how she plans to work with the government as an opposition MP, Nabatta made it clear that her service is to the voters of Entebbe, not to the government.
Regarding parliamentary committees, Nabatta, being an accountant by profession, expressed a preference for the Public Accounts Committee to ensure financial accountability. She also aims to serve on the Gender Committee, where she intends to focus on empowering women. However, she also voiced her disagreement with the injustices men face as a result of family disagreements.
Furthermore, Nabatta has pledged to actively represent the interests of the Buganda region by being an active member of the Buganda Caucus in Parliament.
