The Democratic Front party has requested Parliament’s recall to debate the Nakivubo channel construction project.
The Democratic Front (DF) party has called for Parliament to be recalled to urgently debate the controversial Nakivubo channel construction project. The demand comes in the wake of recent events, including yesterday's trader demonstrations, which have kept the issue in the public eye.
During a press conference at the party headquarters on Namirembe Road, DF spokesperson Moses Kasibante strongly criticised Kampala's political leadership for its silence on the persistent matter, which he claims is claiming lives. He specifically blamed the Leader of Opposition for failing to advise the government, given that he represents Kampala, and also faulted the shadow cabinet minister, Kawalya, for not speaking out. Kasibante further accused the National Unity Platform (NUP) Secretary General, Lewis Lubongoya, of neglecting a directive from the Lord Mayor to whip NUP councillors in the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) who had been allegedly compromised.

The party also tasked the KCCA Speaker, Zahara Luyirika, to issue a public apology for rejecting an executive report from the Lord Mayor that advised against proceeding with the project without proper supervision.
Adding to the criticism, the party's chairperson, Samuel Lubega Mukaaku, questioned how the technical advice from the KCCA engineering department, including the Environmental Impact Assessment report, was ignored. He expressed dismay that the government has neglected a World Bank project into which 200 million dollars of taxpayer money had been injected.
Former KCCA Councillor Aidah Nakuya raised concerns about the illicit allocation of public land, questioning why the KCCA Speaker approved such a decision without the authority's knowledge. She cited the illegal issuance of land meant for youth to businessman Hassan Bsajabala, as well as land belonging to the disabled community.
Furthermore, Nakawa West aspirant Happy Nasasira accused the Speaker of Parliament of halting a COSASE investigation into the process and instead appointing a select committee that has yet to deliver its report.
Finally, former East African Assembly contestant Nakitende Salaama expressed her displeasure with the opposition's overall negligence and failure to take responsibility, which she stated is a great disservice to the people of Kampala.
