Chaos Mars DP Delegates Conference in Mbarara
The Democratic Party's 12th national delegates conference in Mbarara descended into chaos as police blocked over 1,500 delegates from accessing the venue. The contentious election for new party leadership saw Bukoto Central MP Richard Ssebamala and Mukono South's Fred Kayondo physically prevented from participating, despite holding valid accreditation. Â
The conference, meant to elect DP's leadership for the next five years, began at 7:00 AM but quickly stalled as security personnel enforced an exclusionary delegates list. Kennedy Mutenyi, the party's electoral commission chairperson, ordered the removal of barricades by noon after delegates protested being denied entry and food for hours. Â
Internal divisions erupted publicly, with delegates accusing party president Norbert Mao and secretary general Gerald Siranda of orchestrating the exclusion. Journalists were barred from observing vote counting, raising transparency concerns about the electoral process. Â
