Ugandan Government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has confirmed that the 43 Ugandan students who were studying in Iran shall arrive today from Turkey, where they had been kept since the war between Iran and the US/Israel broke out last Saturday.
The ministry's permanent secretary Vincent Waiswa Bagiire, informed members of the Parliamentary Committee on accountability who were reviewing issues arising from the Auditor General's report for the financial year 2024/2025.
He told the MPs that these students were successfully evacuated and taken to Ankara, Turkey, and are returning home today as they continue to observe the war situation.
MPs including Asuman Basalirwa (Bugiri Municipality) and Patrick Nsamba(Kasanda North) have directed authorities not to focus only on the students but to assist all Ugandans who need help in this war situation.
He announced that only one Ugandan sustained injuries in this war situation and is being treated by authorities at the Uganda Embassy in Iran.
On behalf of companies licensed by government for labour export in Arab nations, Haji Ibrahim Bogere has assured their family members that they are safe and are working according to the guidelines.
Between 500 and 1000 Ugandans board planes daily to go to the Arabian Peninsula for various jobs.
MPs have also asked the President and the Ministry to ensure that diplomatic missions in countries like Kenya, Iran, Canada, and Nigeria are staffed with substantive heads but Bagiire assured them that the President is working on the matter.
They noted that the Non-Aligned Movement, which President Museveni chairs, should assess the situation of this war and declare its position at any time, as requested by the MPs
This war has now entered its sixth day, with over 1,000 people confirmed dead.
