Two Minors Rescued at Midnight from River Mubuku

There was jubilation at River Mubuku in Kisojo Lower Cell, Mubuku Town Council, Kasese District, after two minors and their father were miraculously rescued from the swollen river at midnight, hours after they had been trapped.

The children — Regan Mugabe, 12, and Adolf Mugume, 8 — had reportedly gone fishing on Sunday afternoon. On their way back, they found the river’s water levels had risen sharply, cutting them off from the banks and leaving them stranded on an island-like spot in the middle of the river.

The incident happened at around 4:00 pm. Initial efforts by security forces and police to rescue the trio were unsuccessful. However, at around midnight, two brave boda boda riders — Mr. Kiiza Boy and Mr. Adolf Murungi — stepped in and managed to rescue the children and their father.

The emotional scene brought tears of joy to many onlookers, especially women who had been seen praying fervently, some holding blankets and mats, seeking divine intervention from Mother Mary and Jesus Christ.

Mr. Joseph Isingoma, the Kasese District Senior Planner and Disaster Focal Person, confirmed the incident, commending the selfless efforts of the local community and especially the boda boda riders who risked their lives.“The children were trapped at 4pm and only rescued at midnight. It’s the local community that made it happen.”

Speaking after the rescue, the father of the children, Mr. Sunday Richard, said he could not stand by and watch his children die. Seeing that the authorities were not making any progress, he attempted the rescue himself but also became trapped alongside them.“It was painful watching my children in danger, and when I saw no action from the authorities, I decided to go into the river myself.”

Mr. Mustafa Kikusa, the Principal Secretary in the Office of the Kasese Chief Administrative Officer, appreciated the community’s efforts. He also acknowledged the challenges faced by the police marine unit stationed in Katunguru, Lake Katwe Sub County, noting their lack of appropriate gear to handle river operations.“Our marine officers are based on the lake and are not equipped with the necessary swimming gear for river rescues.”

This heroic effort by local riders and residents serves as a reminder of the strength of community spirit and the urgent need to equip rescue services for such emergencies.
