Bussi, Wakiso District – Residents of Zzinga Island in Bussi Sub-County have expressed gratitude to Wakiso District Chairman Dr. Matia Lwanga Bwanika for his intervention in upgrading Zzinga Health Centre III, particularly the construction of a new maternity ward to address maternal health challenges.
Dr. Bwanika inspected progress on a new maternity block to reduce maternal deaths. The facility will provide safer delivery services and eliminate boat journeys to Entebbe Hospital.
Pregnant women faced life-threatening delays in transportation to distant hospitals, leading to high maternal mortality rates.
Dr. Emmanuel Damba, District Health Officer, confirmed that this project will improve healthcare access for island communities and prevent maternal deaths due to inadequate facilities.
Teddy Nalukenge, the hospital administrator, said, “We now handle more cases locally, so fewer are referred to Entebbe.”
Women praised the initiative, while some residents called for faster completion. Chairman Bwanika said, ‘Island communities deserve quality healthcare. We’re fixing historical neglect.’ He pledged to monitor progress and prevent misuse of funds.
