Mulago Specialized Women And Neonatal Hospital Delivers Second IVF Baby In A Year

Salim and Rukusana, married for five years, welcome their baby girl.

After five years of marriage filled with longing and disappointment, Salim Malinga and Rukusana Sayeed from Mbale District are finally celebrating the arrival of their precious baby girl at Mulago Specialised Women and Neonatal Hospital.

The couple's journey to parenthood culminated successfully through advanced In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) treatment, becoming the second IVF baby delivered at the hospital this year. Dr. David Nsibambi, one of the fertility specialists involved, revealed they are currently supporting 28 women through similar procedures.
"Five years of waiting felt like an eternity," an emotional Rukusana shared during an interview at the hospital. "The societal pressure was immense, with constant questions about when we would have children."
Her husband, Salim, added: "I had started receiving ridicule from in-laws about our childless marriage. This baby has restored our joy and dignity."
The healthy 3.6kg baby girl was delivered through normal birth in the morning hours, according to Dr. Sam Ononge, the hospital director. He explained that the IVF process typically takes 14-15 million shillings and is recommended for women who cannot conceive through conventional methods.
As Parliament considers the Human Assisted Reproductive Technology Bill 2023 to regulate such procedures, fertility expert Dr. Davis Rujumba emphasised the urgency of formalising these services:
"We cannot delay helping desperate couples while waiting for legislation. This technology is transforming lives and should be accessible under proper guidelines," Dr. Rujumba stated.
The successful delivery marks another victory for Uganda's growing fertility treatment capabilities, offering hope to countless couples struggling with infertility across the nation.
