Uganda Launches Second Phase of National Primary School Census

UBOS launched the second phase of its national primary school census, recruiting 1,100 enumerators.

The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) has launched the second phase of its national primary school census and is recruiting 1,100 enumerators to carry out the exercise. This initiative was disclosed by the UBOS Deputy Public Relations Officer, Lawrence Kimbowa, during a press conference at the Media Centre.

The census will focus specifically on government primary schools in the Bunyoro, Acholi, Karamoja, and Rwenzori regions. This phase follows the initial exercise that kicked off in April in the Greater Kampala area, which subsequently suffered a setback due to a strike by primary school teachers.

According to the bureau, the four-day exercise will collect detailed data on the school environment. This includes gathering the learner's information number, national identification number, and class for each student. The census will also actively engage teachers to obtain additional information. Furthermore, the enumerators will question teachers about their own education status and areas of speciality, and will also collect data on non-teaching staff.

UBOS has reiterated that the core purpose of the census is not to criminalise any schools but to gather crucial information that will help the government identify areas for improvement and enhance service delivery in the education sector. The exercise is scheduled to be concluded on Thursday.
