Government Schools in Mityana Face Infrastructure Crisis

Parents are threatening mass protests if no action is taken by the opening of Term III.  

Mityana, Uganda – A storm of frustration is brewing in Mityana Municipality as government primary schools grapple with severe infrastructure decay, forcing parents to withdraw children and teachers to conduct lessons in dilapidated structures.  

 St. Luke Nakibanga Government Primary School: A Case Study in Neglect  
 Collapsing Infrastructure: Classrooms destroyed by storms since 2016 remain unrepaired. Pupils sit on broken desks or bare floors.  
 Shoes Out of Reach: Over 60% of learners lack shoes, exposing them to health risks.  
 Parental Exodus: Many have transferred children to private schools due to unsafe conditions.  

The school received government desks in 2016. A parent-built classroom was destroyed by rain, and letters to authorities remain unanswered.
Neglect of education in favour of swamp fishing is pushing families into poverty.
 Systemic Challenges Across Mityana  
 Swamp Adjacent Schools: 8 government schools near wetlands report similar neglect, violating Uganda’s Wetland Protection Act.  
 Teacher Exodus: 15 educators transferred from St. Luke since 2023 due to poor working conditions.  

 Team Zaake, a local NGO led by Kenneth Ssekibo, provides pads, books, and bread to 1,200 pupils monthly.  
 "We spend UGX 3.5M monthly—money that should come from government," laments Ssekibo.

 Hidden Funds: Allegations that Mityana District received UGX 400 million for school infrastructure in FY 2023/24 remain unaccounted for.
