Women in Nansana Protest, Demand Support from Presidential Initiative

A group of women in Wamala, Nansana, Wakiso District, have publicly protested, accusing the President's representative, the Gombolola (GA) President, of neglecting them and failing to improve their living standards.

The women had pinned their hopes on a government initiative, the Youth Wealth Creation program, which in this area falls under the leadership of a man named Faizo Ndase. Mr Ndase reportedly received his appointment from Jane Barekye, the Woman Member of Parliament for Wakiso, who also serves as the Commissioner of the National Treasury. The women credit Ms Barekye for developing her home area and supporting children.

The protest took a political turn when Faizo Ndase, allegedly on behalf of Jane Barekye, asked the women in Nansana Municipality to refrain from leaving the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party. This request was made with a specific focus on the upcoming 2026 general elections, when the nation will decide its next leaders.
In response, Jane Barekye sent a message through Faizo Ndase, informing the women that the law does not allow leaders to give out money for political campaigns. However, Mr Ndase reportedly countered this by reminding them that the presidential election had already been concluded in January with President Museveni's victory, and it was now time to address their specific problems.

The aggrieved women, who had gathered to learn practical skills to uplift their livelihoods, have condemned the GA President for his lack of initiative. They, in turn, have promised to continue showing loyalty and friendship to the NRM party.

Long-time advocates for women's empowerment have expressed disappointment at being overlooked for positions within the "Bakyala" (Women's) league. They argue that they could contribute more effectively and prevent the government from being misled by individuals who make empty promises about improving women's welfare.
