Women in Bunyoro Struggle with Firewood Scarcity and Climate Change Amid Oil Exploration

Women in the Bunyoro region, particularly in the districts of Hoima, Buliisa, and Kikuube, are facing significant challenges due to the scarcity of firewood and the adverse effects of climate change. These challenges have been exacerbated by the oil exploration activities around Lake Albert, which have disrupted their traditional sources of firewood and impacted their livelihoods.

During a community engagement organized by Green Faith in Africa and the local leadership in Hoima District, women highlighted how the extraction of oil has led to environmental degradation, making it increasingly difficult for them to access firewood. This has forced them to travel long distances in search of firewood, a task that is both time-consuming and physically demanding.

Lynne, a representative from Green Faith in Africa, emphasized the need for sustainable solutions to protect the environment while supporting the livelihoods of women in the region. She called for widespread education across Africa on the importance of environmental conservation and sustainable practices.

The women shared their personal struggles, noting that the scarcity of firewood has not only affected their daily lives but also hindered their ability to engage in income-generating activities. Many expressed frustration over the lack of alternative energy sources, which has left them reliant on firewood despite its dwindling availability.

They appealed to the government and development partners to provide them with solar energy solutions and other sustainable alternatives to reduce their dependence on firewood. The women also called for support in adopting modern cooking technologies that are environmentally friendly and efficient.

It is worth noting that oil exploration in the region began in 2007, and since then, the local communities have experienced significant changes in their environment and way of life. The women’s plight underscores the need for a balanced approach to development that considers the well-being of local communities and the preservation of the environment.

The engagement concluded with a call for collaborative efforts to address the challenges faced by women in the Bunyoro region. By providing sustainable energy solutions and promoting environmental conservation, stakeholders can help improve the quality of life for these women while safeguarding the region’s natural resources for future generations.
