In a significant move to promote green energy and technological innovation, the Ministry of Science and Technology has flagged off a team of over 60 Ugandans on an expedition to South Africa using a locally manufactured electric bus.
The event was presided over by the Minister of Works and Transport, General Katumba Wamala, who has consistently urged Ugandans to adopt electric vehicles to mitigate global environmental degradation.
The expedition, known as the African Electric Expedition, will see the team travel through five countries—Tanzania, Zambia, Botswana, and Eswatini—before reaching their final destination in Cape Town, South Africa. The primary goal is to showcase Uganda's advancements and potential in the field of electric mobility on an international stage.
The ceremony was graced by the Minister of Works and Transport, Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala, on behalf of the Prime Minister of Uganda, the Right Honourable Robinah Nabbanja. Minister General Katumba Wamala, in flagging off the bus to South Africa, reiterated his call for the public to embrace electric buses as a way to protect the planet's environment.
"We are participating in this expedition to gain exposure for our products and to promote our technology internationally. This is a learning and marketing mission for our country."
Minister Musenero further explained that the performance of the electric bus in local transport, particularly for commuter services, has been impressive. She noted that the drivers involved in the test phase have reported no major issues, proving the vehicle's reliability.
"Our electric buses offer a comfortable and luxurious travel experience. We are demonstrating that Ugandan innovation can provide a superior and eco-friendly mode of transport."
The expedition has garnered significant corporate support, with a partnership from MTN Uganda to provide data services. This will allow the team to document and share their journey in real-time.

Paul Musasizi, the Managing Director of KIRA Motors, also expressed his enthusiasm for the expedition's potential to open up new markets and attract interest in Ugandan technology.

MTN Uganda will be at the forefront of welcoming the Ugandan team upon their arrival in Cape Town, South Africa. The send-off ceremony was attended by several MTN executives and other partners supporting this ambitious journey.
