Uganda Calls for Tech-Driven Workplace Safety Reforms

Gender, Labour and Social Development Minister Betty Amongi

Namanve, Uganda – Gender, Labour and Social Development Minister Betty Amongi has championed the digital transformation of workplace safety measures, particularly in high-risk industries, during Uganda's observance of World Day for Safety and Health at Work.

The event, hosted at Uganda Industrial Research Institute (UIRI) in Namanve, spotlighted emerging workplace challenges in Uganda's industrialising economy. Minister Amongi emphasised that artificial intelligence and advanced technologies must become frontline tools for hazard detection and prevention.

Key Developments from the Forum

1. Digital Transformation of Workplace Safety
Minister Amongi stressed that Uganda's rapid industrialisation demands smarter safety solutions: "As factories multiply and construction projects expand, we cannot rely on manual safety checks alone. AI-powered monitoring systems can predict equipment failures and prevent accidents before they occur."

2. Legal Framework Enforcement
UIRI Executive Director Dr. Charles Kwesiga reinforced the urgency to fully implement Uganda's Occupational Safety and Health Act, noting: "Our inspections reveal 40% of industrial accidents stem from preventable protocol violations. Technology will help us enforce compliance in real-time."

3. Worker-Centric Tech Integration
While endorsing technological adoption, worker representatives cautioned against displacement fears. "AI should augment human labour, not replace it," asserted Uganda Workers' Federation Secretary General Dan Muganga. "We must simultaneously address mental health stressors in automated workplaces."

4. Industry Recognition
Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL) received top honours for its zero-fatality record in 2023. CEO Eng. Harrison Mutikanga attributed this to their Iot-enabled safety system that monitors high-voltage environments and worker vitals simultaneously.

Emerging Concerns:
- 23% increase in factory accidents reported in 2023 (Ministry data)
- Only 12% of Ugandan manufacturers currently use smart safety systems
- Growing skills gap in tech-augmented workplaces

The minister announced plans to establish regional technology-equipped safety training centres and review the Occupational Safety and Health Act to incorporate digital monitoring standards. This comes as Uganda prepares to host the Africa Safety Summit in Q4 2024.
