Uganda Bureau of Statistics expresses the need to leverage innovations in data and statistics to promote peace and security in Uganda and other African countries.
Â
According to Flavia Oumar, Principal IT office in charge of digital in UBOS, such an initiative is to help the Statistics Students on how to collect and handle data while doing work and ensure that it will be implemented in the whole country.
Â
This was during a students' symposium on Africa Statistics Week celebrations at Uganda Christian University in Mukono, which was attended by more than 80 universities all over the country. Â
She has also raised the concern of giving out wrong data from different entities, which led to poor planning from the government. She appealed to the concerned entities to always be open when it comes to data collection.
Â
Head of Department, Outreach and Quality Assurance  UBOS, Lydia  Namono, says that through evidence-based data and statistics, security organisations like the police can identify potential hot spots of violence and prevent it before it escalates.
Lydia Namono also expressed her concern about the misuse of data, which is common, especially during this time of elections.
Her Worship Daphine Ayebare, the vice president of the Uganda Judicial Officers Association, who represented the President of Uganda Judicial Officers Association, Hon Lady Justice Olive Kazaarwe Mukwaya, during her remarks, emphasised the importance of data in the judicial system, more so in case backlog, and she advises the students.
Several Students who attended have welcomed the initiative, though there are a lot of challenges we are still facing.
Students from several Universities in Uganda have joined Makerere, Kyambogo, Islam, Kampala International, UCU and others, together with the Uganda Bureau of Statistics the all World to celebrate African Statistics through teaching Economic statistics in handling data to benefit the country.
UCU and Kampala International University won the competition, and they were given prizes.
