Mbale, Uganda ,In a vibrant show of solidarity and cultural pride, hundreds of participants gathered in Mbale town for the annual Kabaka Run, celebrating the 70th birthday of the Kabaka of Buganda, His Majesty Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II.
The event, held outside the Buganda Kingdom in the Bugisu region, demonstrated widespread support for the monarch, with runners proudly waving the Buganda flag high.
The run, which kicked off at the Children’s Lions Park in the heart of Mbale, saw participants cover a 5-kilometer distance in a peaceful and joyous atmosphere. Many runners, exhausted but enthusiastic, chose to walk part of the way, yet their spirits remained unshaken as they honored their king. No injuries were reported, and the event concluded successfully.
Participants expressed their deep admiration for the Kabaka, with many wishing him long life and promising unwavering support. "We love our king and will always stand by him," said one runner. "This run is our way of showing loyalty and celebrating his legacy."
Stronger Support Than Ever Before
According to Mr. Ssebunga Rashid, the Chief of Buganda in Bugisu, this year’s event saw significantly greater participation compared to previous editions. He extended gratitude to all who supported the Kabaka and emphasized the importance of unity across regions.
In his address, Ssebunga also urged the youth to prioritize their health, cautioning them against the dangers of HIV/AIDS. "As we celebrate, let us also remember to stay safe and protect our future," he said.
The Kabaka Run, traditionally held in Kampala, has increasingly gained traction in other parts of Uganda, symbolizing the enduring influence and respect for the Buganda Kingdom beyond its borders. This year’s edition in Mbale proved yet again that the Kabaka’s legacy continues to inspire unity and cultural pride nationwide.
