Residents of Naminya Village in Buikwe District Demand Action Over Polluted River

Residents of Naminya Village in Njeru Municipality, Buikwe District, have raised concerns over the pollution of their local river by nearby companies, which has led to widespread health issues in the community. The issue was brought to light during a meeting organized by area Member of Parliament Diana Mutasingwa, who called for immediate action to address the problem.

 

The residents accused companies, particularly Parumk Industries, of dumping waste into the river, contaminating the water and causing diseases. They expressed frustration over the lack of accountability from the companies and the failure of local leaders to intervene effectively.  

During the meeting, MP Diana Mutasingwa listened to the grievances of the community and pledged to take action. She directed the companies to halt their operations temporarily and begin cleaning the river. Mutasingwa assured the residents that she would monitor the situation closely to ensure compliance.  

The MP also urged the community to remain patient and vigilant as efforts are made to resolve the issue. She emphasized the importance of protecting the environment and ensuring access to clean water for all residents.  

Kyaasa Sityalossi, the Mayor of Njeru Municipality, commended MP Mutasingwa for her intervention and called on the community to cooperate with authorities to achieve a lasting solution. He also urged residents to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands.  

Stoney Waguma, the Chairperson of Naminya Village, highlighted the challenges faced by the community, particularly the lack of clean water. He expressed gratitude to the MP for her efforts and called for continued support to address the issue.  

Local health worker Veronica Nabatanzi confirmed that the polluted river has led to an increase in waterborne diseases in the area. She welcomed the MP’s intervention and expressed hope that the situation would improve soon.  

The meeting concluded with a commitment from the companies to clean the river and implement measures to prevent future pollution. The residents expressed relief and optimism that their concerns were finally being addressed.
