Kyungu Village, Mukono Central Division – For nearly a month, residents of this area have been plunged into darkness after a section of their power supply was disconnected due to illegal electricity tapping.
The situation has taken a dire turn, with thieves stealing live power cables, leaving the community without electricity. A well-intentioned resident who attempted to restore power by installing new wiring also failed after the cables were stolen just a day later.
Growing Fear and Frustration
Locals who rely on electricity for businesses, including salons, milk vendors, and metal workshops, expressed deep frustration. Some admitted they now fear operating in the evenings, as thieves have increasingly targeted their workplaces under the cover of darkness.
Peter Tumweigye, a local leader in Kyungu, acknowledged the crisis, particularly affecting businesses dealing in perishable goods like milk. He Prealed that leaders have stepped in to assist but admitted the problem persists.
Mariam Kisakye Gabula, the area councilor, described the situation as "extremely distressing" and urgently called on Umeme (Uganda’s power distributor) to intervene swiftly.
