Minister Magyezi Warns Mbale City Leaders Against Selling Government Land, Demands Clean-Up in Two Months

Mbale City, Uganda – The Minister of Local Government, Hon. Raphael Magyezi, has issued a stern warning to Mbale City leadership against the illegal sale of government land. During his official visit to the city, the Minister emphasized the critical need to protect public land, which he described as a vital resource for future development projects.

The Minister’s warning comes in the wake of a previous incident four years ago, when he intervened to reclaim land belonging to Nakaloke  Sub County that had been illegally sold to private investors by city officials. At the time, land designated for police stations, health centers, and courts of law had been auctioned off, prompting concerned locals to report the matter to the Minister. His timely intervention saved the government from losing valuable public assets.

Addressing Mbale City Mayor Kassim Namugali and other leaders, Hon. Magyezi urged them to prioritize the protection of government land. “This land is not for personal gain; it belongs to the people and must be safeguarded for future development,” he stated. He emphasized that preserving public land would enable the city to undertake essential projects such as building schools, recreational parks, and other developmental initiatives that benefit the community.

In addition to the land issue, the Minister expressed concern over the deteriorating cleanliness of Mbale City, which was once renowned as the cleanest town in Uganda and East Africa. He called on city leaders to take immediate action to restore the city’s former glory by ensuring it is free of garbage and well-maintained. Hon. Magyezi set a strict two-month ultimatum for the city leadership to implement effective measures to clean up the city.

“Mbale was once a shining example of cleanliness and order. It is disheartening to see the current state of the city. I urge you to take this matter seriously and ensure that Mbale regains its status as a clean and well-organized city,” the Minister said.

The Minister’s visit has reignited hope among residents, who are optimistic that his intervention will lead to positive changes in the city. Mayor Kassim Namugali pledged to work closely with the city leadership to address the issues raised and ensure that government land is protected and the city is cleaned up within the stipulated timeframe.

As Mbale City faces these critical challenges, the Minister’s strong stance serves as a reminder of the importance of accountability and good governance in fostering sustainable development.

This story highlights the Minister’s call to action and the expectations placed on Mbale City leaders to protect public resources and improve the city’s cleanliness.
