Residents of Greater Masaka have taken a stand to combat unemployment. The president has been sensitising the public about fish farming as a means to generate income.

Fish vendors in Nyendo Market have started engaging in fish farming after realising that their current sales are insufficient. They have even encouraged their fellow vendors to initiate this project. The initiative was led by their chairman, Hoodu Kembamba Badru, during a fish farming workshop organised by the city's commercial officer, Ronald Mugerwa. Mugerwa stated that the project could increase fish production and help reduce unemployment rates in the area.

Resty Mwanje, a city councillor and fish farmer, mentioned that while the project is profitable, there are challenges, particularly the scarcity of fish feed. This scarcity has prompted her to diversify into poultry farming.

Farmers expressed that they lack proper fish farming methods to fully benefit from the initiative. They noted the need for collaboration to produce their fish feed, given the current shortages. They are also encouraging others to join them, as selling fish could help them pay for their children's school fees.

Ronald Mugerwa, the commercial city officer, emphasised that although Masaka City is located near the lake, residents must start rearing fish to allow the lake to breathe and recover. The government has been encouraging this approach.
