Sugarcane farmers in Greater Mukono hail new sugar bill as game changer Â
Mukono District – Sugarcane growers under the Greater Mukono Sugarcane Growers Cooperative have welcomed President Museveni's recent assent to the Sugar Bill 2024, expressing optimism that the new law will address longstanding challenges in the sector. Â
The legislation, enacted on June 22, aims to achieve the following objectives:
Establish regulated sugarcane pricing mechanisms to safeguard farmers from exploitation by millers.
Enhance quality standards for both domestic consumption and international export.
Resolve disputes between growers and factory owners regarding supply agreements. Â
During elections for the National Sugarcane Steering Committee held at Kawolo in Lugazi, farmers from Mukono, Buikwe, Kayunga, and Buvuma unanimously selected Julius Katerevu as their chairperson to represent their interests. Â
Â
"For years, we’ve been at the mercy of millers. This law gives us hope for better prices and fair treatment," said one grower. Another added, "President Museveni’s support means we can finally farm with dignity." Â
Katerevu, now tasked with advocating for farmers at the national level, pledged: Â
"I will ensure our voices are heard, especially on market access and pricing. We won’t let this opportunity slip away." Â
 Government Backing Â
Maj. David Matovu, RDC of Buikwe, praised the cooperative spirit among farmers and urged them to leverage government programs like the Parish Development Model to boost productivity. Â
Â
The steering committee includes delegates from Buganda, Busoga, Bunyoro, and Northern Uganda, ensuring diverse perspectives in policy discussions. Â
