Security authorities in Mukono District have directed all village chairpersons to urgently register residents in their areas as part of intensified efforts to curb a surge in violent crime.
The directive was issued by Maj Gen. Stephen Mugerwa, commander of the UPDF 1st Infantry Division, following a wave of night-time attacks that have left the district gripped with fear.
The most recent incidents include the fatal hacking of a Seeta High School teacher and continued assaults on female factory workers in Namawojjolo village.
While addressing local leaders, civil servants, politicians, and religious figures at the Resident District Commissioner’s office in Mukono, Maj. Gen. Mugerwa emphasized the need for proper documentation of village populations to identify criminal elements hiding within communities.
“This registration will help us track unfamiliar individuals and prevent infiltration by wrongdoers. We are committed to protecting citizens and will act firmly against those who disrupt public order,” he said.
Deputy RDC Hassan Kasibante expressed concern over reports that some of the criminals masquerade as security operatives and allegedly receive backing from corrupt officers within the system. He warned that the ongoing operations would not spare such collaborators.
Village chairpersons from the most affected areas including Nabuti Cell, Namawojjolo, and Bajjo appealed for stronger support from police and the army. They reported frequent attacks on residents returning home at night and requested more patrols.
However, some local leaders also criticized the conduct of security forces, accusing them of arresting suspects without involving community leaders.
They argued that such actions undermine local governance and breed mistrust.
Former district chairperson Francis Lukooya Mukoome decried widespread corruption in security operations, particularly around lakeshore communities. He warned that unless accountability improves, the district could face deeper insecurity.
Mukono District Police Commander Bernard Mugerwa confirmed that operations targeting criminal gangs are ongoing and that several suspects have already been apprehended.
He urged residents to stay vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement.
