A man in Kasese Municipality has been arrested for allegedly attacking his wife and cutting off her hands. The suspect, identified as Hassan Ngobi Kadogo, a resident of Roadberrier Cell in Nyakabingo III Ward, Bulembia Division, is currently being held at Kasese Central Police Station.
When Salt TV visited Kadogo’s residence, an eerie silence filled the air. The house remained shut, with no signs of activity except for a few passersby glancing at the deserted home.
Just a few meters from the residence, a grim sight awaited—blood-stained gloves lay on the ground, marking the exact spot where Esther Mbambu, the victim, was found lying in a pool of blood.
According to Superintendent of Police Luke Mbusa, the Rwenzori East Regional Community Liaison Officer, police received a distress call at around 9 PM and rushed to the scene.
Mbambu, critically injured, was immediately taken to Mt. St. Mary’s Hospital in Kasese Town for emergency treatment.
Aidah Ngene, a neighbor, recounted that she heard cries for help around 8 PM but initially assumed Kadogo was disciplining his children. It wasn’t until later that she realized the victim was Mbambu, who had fled in distress.
At the hospital, relatives of both the suspect and the victim anxiously gathered, waiting for updates on Mbambu’s condition.
Dr. Richard Mubangizi, a physician at Mt. St. Mary’s Hospital, confirmed that Mbambu suffered deep head wounds and had both hands traumatically amputated. Doctors are working tirelessly to stabilize her condition.
Local parish leader Sunday Salveri revealed that after the attack, Kadogo went into hiding. However, he was intercepted the next morning while attempting to flee the area with a blood-stained panga.
According to Salveri, Kadogo’s children claimed they saw their father sharpening the panga on Thursday morning. They also mentioned ongoing domestic conflicts in their home.
Upon his arrest, Kadogo allegedly pleaded for forgiveness.
This brutal attack follows another domestic violence case earlier in the week, where a retired police sergeant fatally shot his wife.
Annet Kobusinge, a women’s rights activist in Kasese, raised concerns over the rising cases of violence against women in the district, which have led to numerous family breakups and social instability.
She urged couples to seek counseling and conflict resolution mechanisms before resorting to violence.
Local church leader Nelson Masereka echoed her call, urging communities to offer guidance and support to struggling couples to prevent further tragedies.
Authorities have vowed to ensure justice for Esther Mbambu, while activists continue to call for awareness and intervention to curb gender-based violence in the region.
