Kamuli Mother Arrested Over Suspected Killing and Burial of One-Year-Old Daughter

Kamuli, Uganda – Police in Kamuli District have arrested a 21-year-old mother, Mulungi Zainabu, on suspicion of killing and burying her one-year-old daughter, Kabawo Hadija. The incident, which has shocked the local community, occurred in Nalinaibi village, Nawanyago sub-county.

According to authorities, Mulungi allegedly buried her child on Sunday, March 9, 2025. Concerns were raised by neighbors and relatives after they noticed the child had been missing for two days. When questioned, Mulungi claimed she had taken the baby to the hospital and was planning to check on her.

However, suspicions deepened when Mulungi left her home on Tuesday and did not return until her arrest in Kamuli Municipality on Thursday. On Friday, March 14, 2025, at around 9:00 pm, family members detected a foul smell near their home. A search led to the discovery of a suspected grave, which was later confirmed to be the burial site of the child after the local chairperson was involved.

The matter was immediately reported to the police, who launched an investigation. Preliminary findings revealed that the suspect’s husband, Kabawo Asuman, was away attending to his other home in Mbulamuti at the time of the incident. Before his departure, the child had fallen ill, and both parents had sought medical attention. Asuman expressed shock upon learning of his daughter’s death.

A team of detectives visited the scene, recovered the body, and transported it to Kamuli General Hospital for a postmortem to determine the cause of death. Further investigations are ongoing to uncover more details surrounding the tragic incident.

In a statement, ASP Kasadha Michael, the Regional Spokesperson for Busoga North, commended the public for their vigilance and prompt reporting, which led to the suspect’s arrest.

The case has left the community in mourning and raised questions about the circumstances that may have led to such a heartbreaking event. Authorities have urged anyone with additional information to come forward as they continue their investigation.
