Funeral Turns Deadly: Barber Stabs Peacemaker to Death in Bulambuli

BULAMBULI, UGANDA– Police in Bulambuli District are holding a 20-year-old barber, Kutosi Emma, on allegations of stabbing his friend to death in the early hours of May 30, 2026, following a quarrel at a funeral.
 
The suspect, also known as Mafabi, a resident of Masaba Cell in Bulegeni Town Council, is alleged to have used a sharp knife to fatally wound Mwanga Emmanuel, 20, after the deceased tried to intervene in a fight.
 
According to a police spokes person of elgon region SP Rogers Taitika said ,the tragic sequence of events began on the evening of May 29. The deceased, Mwanga Emmanuel, a peasant from Chesumu Central in Kapchorwa District, left his home at about 10:00 PM to attend the funeral of his late uncle, Mangusho Robert, in Kirise Cell, Bulegeni Town Council.
 
The incident occurred at approximately 2:00 AM. A quarrel broke out between an individual identified only as Meddy and the suspect, Kutosi Emma, which quickly escalated into a physical fight. In an attempt to de-escalate the situation, Mwanga went to separate the two brawlers. It was during this peacemaking effort that he was allegedly stabbed with a knife by Kutosi.
 
Mwanga was immediately rushed to Muyembe Hospital in critical condition but was later referred to Mbale Hospital for specialized treatment. He succumbed to his injuries on June 1, 2026. A postmortem examination was conducted at Mbale City Mortuary, after which the body was released to grieving relatives for burial.
 
The matter was formally reported to the authorities by Nana Milton, a peasant and resident of Chesumu Central Village, Kapchorwa District.
 
"The suspect is arrested and is in custody at Bulambuli Central Police Station as investigations continue," a police source confirmed. Detectives are actively pursuing several leads, including tracing the girlfriend of the suspect and the man identified as Meddy to record their statements. The recovery of the knife believed to have been used in the fatal stabbing is also a priority in the ongoing investigation.
