A heated family dispute has erupted in Kikooza Village, Mukono Central Division, after a grandmother, Babirye Babra, 45, allegedly claimed that she gave birth to her granddaughter, Lule Latif, who is 2½ months old. The child’s mother, Nalweyiso Bridget, 22, has accused her mother of lying and has reported the matter to Wantooni Police Station for intervention.
The conflict began when Babirye insisted that she was the biological mother of the child, claiming that her daughter, Bridget, could not have given birth. This led to a series of arguments and counter-accusations between the two, with Bridget accusing her mother of trying to take away her child and giving her to a man named Kamoga Ashraf, whom Babirye claims is the father.
The situation escalated when Bridget sought help from the police, alleging that her mother had taken the child and refused to return her. According to Bridget, her mother has been spreading false claims that she (Babirye) gave birth to the child, even though Bridget insists that she is the rightful mother. When the police intervened, tensions flared further. Babirye maintained her stance, claiming that she gave birth to the child at a local dispensary. However, Bridget tearfully refuted her mother’s claims, stating that her mother had no right to take her child and give her to a man who is not the father. Bridget also revealed that the alleged father, Kamoga Ashraf, had threatened not to return the child if anything happened to her.
Neighbors and local residents expressed shock at the unfolding drama, with many siding with Bridget. They confirmed that they had witnessed Bridget’s pregnancy and were aware that she had given birth to the child. Kimbowa Ssonko, the village chairperson, criticized Babirye’s actions, stating that it was inappropriate for her to claim the child as her own and give her to another man. He also expressed disappointment that the situation had escalated to such a level.
After hours of arguments and emotional outbursts, both Babirye and Bridget were taken to Mukono Police Station for further investigation. The police are now working to determine the true identity of the child’s biological mother and resolve the paternity dispute. This incident has left the community in shock, highlighting the complexities of family dynamics and the emotional toll such disputes can take. As the investigation continues, the family and authorities hope to find a resolution that ensures the child’s well-being and restores peace to the household.
