80-Year-Old Woman in Legal Battle Over Prime Makerere Land

An 80-year-old woman,Edith Natumbwe Kizito, has petitioned the Law Development Centre (LDC) court in Makerere, seeking legal protection against a woman named Mariam Kuteesa, whom she accuses of attempting to grab her land.

The contested land is approximately 5 acres and 8 decimals, identified as Block Number 28, Plot Number 540, located in Makerere Mukubira Zone.

The elderly woman, Mrs Natumbwe, explained that she originally bought this land from her friend, Christina Nakalanzi, in 1973. The money for the purchase was provided by her late husband, Kizito Kiwuta. She stated that this land is her ancestral home, where she has lived and raised her children.

She further testified that on August 3,1994, she processed a land title transfer to put the property in the names of her four children: Mukalazi Joshua Kizito, Elina Kizito, and others.

Mrs Natumbwe told the court that she was shocked to hear rumours that someone was trying to take her land. She reported that she took all necessary steps, including going to the police and the courts, to seek justice. She claims the courts initially halted the process because Mariam Kuteesa presented documents of administration.

The elderly woman revealed that she even wrote to the President, who directed her case to the State Minister for Lands, Sam Mayanja. The Minister investigated the matter and, according to Mrs Natumbwe, exposed Mariam Kuteesa's side as having no legitimate claim to the land. She pleads for the court not to allow further trespassing on her property.

It was reported that Minister Mayanja provided a written response to conclude the matter, aiming to help her get justice.

One of Mrs Natumbwe's sons, Mukalazi Joshua Kizito, expressed the family's exhaustion from appearing in various courts. He stated that in 2016, Justice Remmy Kasule advised them to negotiate with Mariam Kuteesa.

He also informed the court that Chief Magistrate Timothy Lumunye has set a hearing for January 29,2026, to proceed with the matter of the land title.

When reached for a comment, the legal representatives for Mariam Kuteesa's side, led by lawyer Brian Othieno, declined to speak, stating that the matter is still before the court.
