Mukono, Uganda – The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party's village-level elections in Mukono District descended into chaos on Tuesday, with violent clashes, voter eligibility disputes, and allegations of foul play disrupting the exercise in several areas.
Â
The most dramatic scenes unfolded at Kitega Village polling station where police intervention was required to quell fighting between rival factions. Mukono District Police Commander Benard Mugerwa and ASP Ngobi of Wantoni Police Station led security teams to restore order after physical altercations broke out between supporters of competing candidates. Â
- Supporters of candidate Sadat Katabila attempted to force their way to the front of voting lines Â
- Stone-throwing incidents injured several participants Â
- Police fired teargas to disperse the violent crowds Â
Multiple polling stations faced challenges with voter registers: Â
- In Mulago Village, Mukono Central Division, over 100 residents protested their exclusion from the NRM register despite being party members Â
- Division Chairman Ramathan Lubowa accused opponents of manipulating the register to disadvantage certain candidates Â
- NRM District Registrar Benon Ssekanyo ordered suspension of elections in Mulago pending verification Â
 Leadership Responds Â
NRM District Administrator Fred Herman Lubega Sseruga appealed for calm: "We urge all members to remain peaceful as we investigate these complaints. The party must emerge stronger from this exercise." Â
Meanwhile, ONC coordinator JB Wamala acknowledged irregularities in some areas while praising smooth proceedings elsewhere: "Where we've had challenges, we're working with security to ensure fairness." Â
