New regulations at Lugazi Kinyolo Market to restore order

Kinyolo Market Leadership in Lugazi Enforces New Regulations to Restore Order, Causing Mixed Reactions Among Traders

The management of Kinyolo Market has introduced and begun enforcing a new set of bylaws aimed at organising the market's operations and improving cleanliness. This has forced traders to make immediate changes, while others have resorted to operating from home to avoid the new rules.

The Market Master, Namutebi Prossy, stated that the enforcement follows a clear court order. She emphasised that the crackdown targets specific illegal activities that have plagued the market, including: Disorderly conduct, Theft, Unfair or fraudulent trading practices

The enforcement has sparked significant concern among a section of the traders, particularly women with young children.

Their primary appeal is for the market leadership to provide them with a designated childcare area. They argue that without a safe place to leave their children, they face a serious dilemma:
They risk their children wandering off and getting lost.
They fear the shame and potential legal consequences if their children are apprehended.
The situation discourages farmers from bringing their produce to the market, as they cannot manage both their goods and their children.

However, Market Master Namutebi indicated that allowing children in the market is not a viable solution and cannot be permitted to continue.

Conversely, another group of traders has expressed satisfaction with the new laws, particularly those addressing cleanliness and hygiene.

They commend the market leadership for finally tackling the filth that had become a major issue. They request that the enforcement should move beyond mere words and be action-oriented and consistent to ensure the new rules have a lasting impact.
