NIRA Launches Digital National ID Registration Portal

Uganda's National Identification and Registration Authority has introduced an online platform for national ID applications and renewals, with physical verification required for biometric data capture. The system accommodates both new applicants and those renewing IDs expiring June 2025, requiring presentation of application IDs at designated centers for fingerprint and iris scans.

First-time adult registrants must submit copies of their relatives' IDs and letters from the local council, while minors require guardian documentation. Replacement of lost IDs costs UGX 50,000, with personal data changes requiring in-person visits to district offices. Despite a standard four-week processing time, NIRA anticipates initial delays of up to five months before stabilising at two weeks.

The initiative follows NIRA's 2024 partnership with UAE's Tahaluf Al Emarat, which supplied 5,665 biometric kits and high-capacity printers producing 100,000 daily IDs. Nationwide registration commences May 27, 2025, with completed IDs delivered directly to applicants' residences.
