Kasese Celebrates 50 Years of Autonomy with Calls for City Status and Climate Action

Kasese District marked a historic milestone with golden jubilee celebrations commemorating 50 years since its separation from Tooro District. The festivities began with a vibrant procession through Kasese Municipality, where enthusiastic crowds lined the streets waving flags as schoolchildren and cultural groups showcased the region's rich heritage. The celebrations culminated at Nyakasanga Playground, drawing hundreds of residents and dignitaries to reflect on the district's journey.

Royal Appeal for Urban Upgrade
A keynote message from Rwenzururu King Charles Wesley Mumbere Irema-Ngoma, delivered by the Obusinga Bwa Rwenzururu Prime Minister, formally requested the government to elevate Kasese Municipality to city status. This appeal highlighted the area's significant growth, evidenced by the establishment of over 100 health centers, 264 primary schools, and 40 secondary schools since its inception.

Development Showcase
Exhibition stands traced Kasese's evolution from humble beginnings to its current thriving state, displaying achievements in education, infrastructure, and cultural preservation. Guest of Honor Gen. Wilson Mbasu Mbadi, Minister of State for Trade, commended the district's five decades of progress while acknowledging ongoing challenges.

Climate Change Concerns
Amid the celebrations, residents voiced urgent appeals for government intervention on environmental issues. Participants highlighted the district's vulnerability to climate change, particularly recurrent floods that disrupt livelihoods, and pressed for sustainable solutions to address unemployment and ecological threats.

The jubilee served as both a celebration of autonomy and a platform to chart Kasese's future development trajectory, with city status aspirations and climate resilience emerging as key priorities for the next decade.
