MBALE, UGANDA – In a major boost for Uganda’s industrialization and youth employment, the Sino-Uganda Mbale Industrial Park has awarded over 100 internship placements to students from five leading institutions, bridging the long-standing gap between academic theory and industrial practice.
The beneficiaries, drawn from Islamic University In Uganda (IUIU), Uganda Technical College Elgon, Kyambogo University, and others, will gain hands-on experience in critical disciplines including Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Refrigeration, and Cement Engineering.

Laurent Zhang, the Administrative Manager of the Park, described the Industry-Education Integration Students Internship Program as both a corporate responsibility and a strategic investment in Uganda’s future. He announced that the initiative will be an annual program with the potential to expand.
"The program we launch today marks another important milestone for the park," Zhang said. "Over 100 students from five institutions will soon step into our park to begin their hands-on journey. Through this program, we aim to achieve three goals: first, create jobs—enabling more Ugandan youth to find decent work close to home; second, develop talent—passing advanced technology and management expertise to the younger generation; and third, transfer technology—transforming classroom knowledge into production skills, bridging theory and practice."
Addressing the students directly, Zhang offered a rallying call. "You are the future of Uganda," he told them. "We hope you will cherish this opportunity and put your knowledge into practice; remain curious, ask questions, and think deeply; and dare to dream and take responsibility. You are both participants in and beneficiaries of Uganda's industrialization."
For many students, the free internship is a life-changing departure from the norm. Angeny Timothy, a mechatronics student, described the placement as a dream come true. He revealed that the opportunity had already taken him to China for advanced training and benchmarking, exposing him to equipment and expertise his college lacked.
"Most industries in Uganda make students pay for their internships, but not here at Sino Mbale Park," Angeny noted. "This is a great opportunity for most students in Eastern Uganda and Uganda at large to take advantage of."
The sentiment was echoed by Abdallah Sharaf, the Deputy Mayor of Mbale City, who represented the Mayor. He applauded the park’s leadership and challenged the interns to perform with excellence as they transition from the classroom to the job market.
Representing the academic community, Mr. Mukhwana Siraji, Dean of Students at IUIU, who spoke on behalf of the Vice Rector Academics, expressed gratitude for the partnership.
"This program will bridge the gap between theory and practicals," he said. "The skills attained shall be very important in the job market." He urged students to foster strong professional relationships with the park and to maximize every moment of their training.
Since its establishment in 2018, the Sino-Uganda Mbale Industrial Park has aggressively pursued its mission of serving Uganda’s industrialization. The park has attracted 85 enterprises and generated over 14,000 direct local jobs. Its Luban Workshop training facility has already skilled more than 1,200 personnel, creating a formidable technical workforce driving the nation’s industrial growth forward.
