Kampala's Transformation in High Gear as City Readies for AFCON 2027

Kampala is buzzing with unprecedented development energy as the city accelerates its preparations to co-host the prestigious Africa Cup of Nations in 2027.

At the forefront of this remarkable urban renewal are two landmark projects that are set to redefine the city's landscape:
The ongoing redevelopment of the Nakivubo Drainage Channel and the magnificent, newly-completed Hamz Nakivubo Stadium. These initiatives, driven by the visionary investment of Dr. Hamis Kiggundu, are not just about preparing for a tournament; they are about building a lasting legacy for all Ugandans.

The transformation of the Nakivubo Channel is now entering a highly visible and critical phase. The initial stages of extensive cleaning, widening, and strengthening of the drainage system are complete, paving the way for the current work of covering the channel.

This ambitious engineering feat is progressing at an impressive and professional pace, turning a long-standing public health challenge into a modern infrastructure marvel.

The sight of construction teams working diligently to seal the channel signifies a final farewell to the flooding, foul odors, and security threats that once plagued the area, promising a cleaner, safer, and more aesthetically pleasing environment for businesses and residents.

Parallel to this, the new Hamz Nakivubo Stadium stands as a breathtaking symbol of Ugandan excellence and ambition.

This world-class sporting facility, developed with a monumental private investment, has been completely transformed into a state-of-the-art complex. With a capacity of 35,000 spectators and FIFA-certified facilities, the stadium is already a proud hub for Ugandan football, hosting premier league matches and international competitions.

It stands ready and fully equipped to be a prime venue for AFCON 2027, ensuring that Uganda offers an unforgettable experience for players and fans from across the continent.

The synchronization of these two projects is a masterstroke in urban planning. The redevelopment of the channel directly addresses critical infrastructure and environmental concerns, enhancing the entire precinct around the stadium.

Together, they present a powerful image of a modern, organized, and forward-thinking Kampala. This comprehensive approach demonstrates a deep commitment to not only hosting a successful tournament but also to securing long-term benefits for the city, including job creation, economic stimulation, and improved public health.

As the work on covering the Nakivubo Channel continues at a remarkable speed, and with the Hamz Stadium already standing tall, the message to the world is clear.

Uganda is more than ready. The nation is poised to welcome Africa in 2027 with open arms, first-class facilities, and immense pride, thanks to the transformative vision turning Kampala into a true continental capital of sport and culture.
