Fishermen on Lake Albert appreciate government support but request lower taxes and increased financial assistance.
BULISA, UGANDA – Fishermen operating on Lake Albert in Bulisa District have expressed appreciation for the government's support but appealed for a reduction in operational taxes and an increase in financial assistance through the Parish Development Model (PDM).
During an interview with local media this morning in Bulisa District, the fishermen outlined the significant costs they incur for equipment such as boats, fishing nets, and other essential gear, which vary depending on their scale of operation.
They now request that the government boost the PDM funds allocated to each fisher to three million shillings per individual.
The Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Bulisa, Longino Bahebwa, acknowledged the concerns and stated that the government has plans to review the tax structure and also increase the PDM allocations to support local entrepreneurs.
The fishermen currently pay between 70,000 to 90,000 shillings per month in taxes, an amount they describe as challenging given the fluctuating and often unpredictable nature of their daily catch from the lake.
