The Katikiro (Prime Minister) of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has appealed to the government to release former presidential candidate Dr. Kizza Besigye, emphasizing the importance of upholding the rule of law and protecting human rights. Mayiga made the call during a public address, where he also highlighted the need for the government to ensure that all citizens are treated fairly and justly.
Mayiga expressed concern over the deteriorating health of Dr. Besigye, who has reportedly been on a hunger strike while in detention. He stressed that the continued detention of Besigye without due process tarnishes Uganda’s image and undermines the principles of democracy and justice.
The Katikiro referenced President Yoweri Museveni’s recent directive to transfer cases involving civilians from military courts to civilian courts, urging the government to act swiftly in resolving Besigye’s case. He emphasized that adherence to the rule of law is crucial for the country’s progress and stability.
Mayiga also used the occasion to discuss the progress of the "Luwalo" initiative, a community development program aimed at improving infrastructure and livelihoods in Buganda. He revealed that over 1.6 billion shillings were raised last year, with Kyadondo County contributing the highest amount of over 400 million shillings.
The Katikiro launched a new campaign under the Luwalo initiative called "Tondeka Muluwalo" (Let’s Build Together), which seeks to mobilize resources and encourage collective efforts in community development. He commended the efforts of local leaders, sub-counties, and individuals who have contributed to the success of the program.
Joseph Kawuki, the Minister in charge of Regional Affairs in the Buganda Kingdom, provided an update on the Luwalo initiative, highlighting its impact on various communities. He reiterated the kingdom’s commitment to fostering development and improving the welfare of its people.
Other leaders and community members present at the event echoed Mayiga’s calls for justice and fairness, urging the government to address the concerns surrounding Besigye’s detention. They emphasized the importance of unity and collective action in addressing both political and developmental challenges.
Katikiro Mayiga’s appeal for the release of Dr. Kizza Besigye underscores the need for the government to uphold the rule of law and ensure justice for all citizens. As the Buganda Kingdom continues to champion community development through initiatives like Luwalo, the call for unity, fairness, and progress remains at the forefront of its agenda.
