Mukono Court Embraces Technology to Enhance Justice Delivery
Mukono, Uganda – The Judiciary has launched a new initiative in Mukono aimed at modernising court processes through Video Conferencing Technology, ensuring efficiency, fairness, and professionalism in handling cases.
Presided over by Hon. Lady Justice Jane Okuo Kajuga, the head of the Judiciary’s Court of Appeal, the system was unveiled during a session at Mukono High Court. The pilot case involved Moses Mutesasira, who appeared remotely on charges of concealing murder and attempted murder related to an incident in Kauga, Mukono District.
Justice Kajuga highlighted the advantages of the technology, including:
Faster case resolution by reducing delays in witness and defendant appearances.
Improved record-keeping with digital documentation.
Enhanced access to justice, particularly for vulnerable groups such as victims, witnesses, and security personnel.
Decongestion of case backlogs in courts.
She urged judicial officers to fully utilize the system to maximize its benefits.
Pamela Lamunu Ochaya, the Judiciary’s Chief Registrar, emphasised that the system will help expedite case hearings while ensuring security and efficiency for all parties involved.
Justice Christopher Madrama, Chairperson of the Judiciary’s ICT Committee, praised the initiative, citing its ability to minimise logistical hurdles and improve service delivery.
Annet Mpabuungi, representing the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), which supported the project, expressed optimism that the technology will enhance access to justice for all Ugandans.
Some attendees welcomed the innovation, noting that it reduces the burden of travel and speeds up justice delivery for ordinary citizens.
