Syria’s leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, has pledged to hold accountable those responsible for harming civilians following days of violent clashes in which Syrian security forces allegedly killed hundreds of civilians from the Alawite religious minority. The violence, described as some of the worst since the fall of the Assad regime, has drawn international concern and condemnation.
According to a UK-based monitor, approximately 830 civilians were killed in what it termed "massacres" targeting Alawites on Syria’s west coast last Friday and Saturday. The BBC, however, has been unable to independently verify the death toll or the details of the incidents.
In a speech broadcast on national television and shared on social media, Sharaa, whose rebel movement played a key role in toppling former President Bashar al-Assad in December, condemned the violence and promised justice for the victims. He also vowed to pursue and bring to justice loyalists of the former Assad regime, whom he accused of continuing to destabilize the country.*"We will not tolerate any harm to civilians, regardless of their religious or ethnic background. Those responsible for these atrocities will be held accountable. We are committed to building a Syria where all citizens can live in peace and security." The Alawite minority, to which the Assad family belongs, has historically been a target of sectarian violence during Syria’s prolonged conflict. The recent clashes have raised fears of further sectarian tensions and retaliation, complicating efforts to stabilize the country after years of civil war.
Sharaa’s government, which emerged from the rebel forces that overthrew Assad, faces significant challenges in restoring order and rebuilding trust among Syria’s diverse communities. The promise to hold perpetrators accountable is seen as a critical step toward addressing grievances and fostering national reconciliation. International observers have called for an independent investigation into the alleged massacres, urging all parties to prioritize the protection of civilians and adhere to international humanitarian law.
