KIYINDI TOWN, BUIKWE DISTRICT – Desperate fishermen and market traders in Kiyindi Landing Site have petitioned Buikwe South MP Dr. Philip Lulume Bayiga to rescue them from economic ruin after being violently evicted from Lake Victoria shores twice in one month.
Crisis at the Landing Site
Double Displacement: First ejected from fishing grounds, then chased from Kiyindi Market, where they sought refuge.
No Warning: "They destroyed our stalls at dawn. We have nowhere to go," said one tearful mother selling silverfish (mukene).
MP's Fury: Lulume blasted leaders for "failing to protect the poor" and pledged to table their grievances in Parliament.
Who’s Behind the Evictions?
Michael Kanaku, spokesperson for the investors accused of masterminding the crackdown, claimed they had "legal rights" to "organize" the lakeshore.
Fishermen’s Counter: "These so-called investors want to privatize our lake. Where should we fish?" argued a 3rdgeneration boat owner.
MP’s Bold Promise
Lulume vowed to:
1. Mobilize fellow legislators to halt further displacements.
2. Demand compensation for destroyed property.
3. Challenge investors’ permits in court if proven illegal.
